From the Airport

From Tullamarine Airport, the cheapest way to get to the CBD is by the SkyBus. A single one-way ticket costs $18.75 and a return is $36. The SkyBus runs approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including public holidays, and will take you to Southern Cross Station. From there, you are able to catch trams, trains, a taxi or Uber to your accommodation. No bookings are required for the SkyBus.

The StarBus is also an affordable way of getting to your destination from the airport. It is a shuttle bus that will deliver you directly to your door in certain suburbs (including Carlton, North Melbourne and Parkville). Tickets range from $20-$27 per person and bookings are required.

If you would prefer to go directly to your accommodation, there are many taxi ranks located around the airport.

Alternatively, Uber is also available from the airport. There are two Uber Pickup Zones – one for Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and another for Terminal 4 which is located on level 2 of the Terminal 4 carpark. Once you have made your way to the Pickup Zone you can request your Uber and be on your way.

Trams

Trams are one of the quickest and easiest ways to get around Melbourne. Most of the CBD is also part of the free tram zone. The Parkville campus, however, is not part of this so it is essential that you make sure you touch on your Myki in order to not be caught by tram inspectors and given a hefty fine.

The main tram stop for the University of Melbourne is the Melbourne University / Swanston Street tram stop. This No. 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 trams all stop here. On the other side of the university, the No. 19 tram runs up Royal Parade and is also a popular route for getting to the university.

Myki

A Myki card is very handy when staying in Melbourne as it is your ticket to using buses, trams and trains. They can be purchased and topped up at 7-Elevens, Australia Post offices and many train stations. There are also top-up machines at many of the bigger tram stops, including the Melbourne University / Swanston Street stop.

Walking and Cycling

If you want to opt for a more eco-friendly mode of transport, walking and cycling are both great options.

Melbourne is a very bike-friendly city and there are many bike paths and bike lanes that you can use for safe travel around the city. There are many Bike Share outposts around the city, including one at Union House at the University of Melbourne. These bikes are free for less than 30 minutes and are easy to locate and access through the app.

Provided the weather is good, walking is also a great option. Since the university is only a 20-minute walk from the CBD, walking around is a great way of getting some exercise and also allowing you to fully take in all of the sites that Melbourne has to offer. It is also a great way to explore and find hidden gems you may otherwise miss.
